ARCHELON participates in the elaboration of the Red Book of Threatened Species of Greece - 18/01/2010

Country-members of IUCN are obliged to elaborate the so-called Red Books, which list the threatened species of flora and fauna in each country. The first Red Book for Animal Species in Greece was made in 1992.

Recently, this book has been updated with inclusion of new data as well as with fauna categories not included in the first book (e.g. invertebrates). In the work team participated, under the scientific supervision of the Hellenic Zoological Society (HZS), more than 100 specialists from Universities, Research Institutes and NGOs, including ARCHELON.

ARCHELON provided recent data on the status of marine turtles in Greece as well as the dangers threatening them. The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) have been listed as Endangered, while the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) as Critically Endangered.

The Red Book of Threatened Animals in Greece provides a danger alarm for many species while it is a valuable tool for the conservation of biodiversity in Greece.

The book will be presented in a press conference, organized by the HZS and WWF-Greece, on Wednesday 27 January 2010, at the conference hall of Athens Lawyers Association (Academias str. 60).
