The small “Matίna”, the first arrival of 2010 - 17/02/2010

During the winter months the arrivals of injured marine turtles are limited because most of them have migrated to warmer waters with more food, such as the northern coasts of Africa and in the Adriatic.

On February 3rd, however, we were warned by the Association of Care and Protection ALKYONI (PAROS Cyclades) that they are sending a turtle that was collected shattered on a beach. This was our first arrival for 2010.

When we went to collect her from Piraeus, it was a big surprise for us to behold a small box containing a small Caretta caretta turtle 8-10cm, that was certainly born in the end of August 2009.

The small Caretta caretta turtle “Matίna” was placed in a dish with lukewarm water and a radiator.
Like other injured turtles, she is hosted in the special space of the Rescue Center and is being taken care of the volunteers of the Centre.

If all goes well with her health, “Matίna” will be released in early summer, when the water of the sea gains an appropriate temperature.
