| ||Τhe last nest on Laganas beach|
This was a very special discovery, as this nest had been missed in the morning and found in the evening. The team on the morning survey took pictures of the track, and showed them to me, and I had no doubt that there would be a nest under that camouflage.
| ||Did you know sea-turtles nest here in Crete?|
I honestly believe the best way to help preserve a species is to inform as many people as possible in all the many ways they can help. This is exactly why the Public Awareness (PA) programme of Archelon is just as important as the monitoring work conducted on the beaches.
| ||Thomas Cook Injured Turtle Sponsorship|
The treatment of injured turtles in our Rescue is crucial, but rehabilitation is very expensive. This is why it is always an amazing gesture when someone chooses to support this work through our injured sea turtle sponsorship programme. Last week, we were lucky enough to receive this support from travel agency Thomas Cook...
| ||Like a Turtle on its back: My Archelon Experience|
...I once heard conservation biology to be defined as ‘the integration of experience and empathy’ and this project fits perfectly with that description. My experience with Archelon woke me up from my individualistic worldview and set off a wave of empathy in me that will hopefully spread like disoriented hatchlings to encompass the entire globe.
| ||...I can do it all again in 2016!|
I started my ARCHELON experience on the 15th of May 2015 and getting the opportunity to learn so much about monitoring and public awareness, working hands on with the beautiful loggerhead and meeting honestly , the most interesting, caring and just genuine people from all over the world, I can truly say it was the most amazing experience I have ever had in my life.
| ||EVS Volunteers at the Rethymno in Crete|
ARCHELON once more this year is hosting three incredible EVS volunteers in Rethymno programme in Crete. The EVS volunteers Vadim, Susana and Rosanna are three young persons who committed themselves for around 5 months to the protection of sea turtles.
| ||Why should I adopt a baby turtle?|
I’m sure that the moment you lay eyes upon the first hatchling you will feel the need to help it in any way possible. If you wish to support ARCHELON you can adopt a baby turtle...
| ||"Raphael" in the blue and green waters of the Ionian Sea|
The release took place in Zakynthos at Crystal beach, in Kalamaki area with the help of three special organizations Atlantica Eleon Grand Resort & SPA, Castelli Hotel and Nefis travel that support the effort of ARCHELON for many years.
| ||There is really nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer|
It feels so special to be part of such a passionate hardworking family...
| ||Τhe 4th Scouts Troops of Corfu in Zakynthos Program |
We would like to thank the Scouts of the 4th Scouts Troops of Corfu and their leader Manolis Orfanoudakis for the Contribution to the ARCHELON Field Program in Zakynthos and we hope for similar activities and meetings in the future.
| ||Joanne, what’s new at the Rescue Centre in June 2015?|
Our volunteer at the Rescue Centre Joanne Stournara updates us on the events from 1 - 30 June 2015.
| ||My time in ARCHELON I will never forget! |
I have been in the project of Zakynthos for two months and it feels as if I am writing about a dream I had. But no, it was all reality. ARCHELON fills your heart with the great spirit of seeing, loving, caring and saving all the living and non-living things surrounding you.
| ||Tiny tracks into an unknown future|
Tiny flipper marks in the sand! They are only half the size of my hand. We follow the little track to the water. The first hatchling of the 2015 season, in Zakynthos, made its way safely to the sea!
