Joanne, whatʼs new at the Rescue Centre?

Our volunteer at the Rescue Centre Joanne Stournara updates us on the events of the week between 23rd and 29th March 2012.

Turtle News:

In general, the warm, sunny spring weather seems to be having a positive effect on the turtles.

Yiannis”, who had a hook surgically removed in January, has started eating on his own. This is great news, since itʼs a first step towards his release back into the sea later this year. He still is receiving treatment for injuries to his neck and front flippers which were probably caused by being entangled in fishing line. As previously reported, several other turtles (like “Leonidas” and “Eleftheria”, for example), are continuing their progress and, if all goes well, will also be released later this year.

Fotini”, a 28-kilo female Caretta caretta, arrived at the Rescue Centre on 24 March from Kavala. She has some scars which indicate she may have been caught in a trawler net, and will be taken for X-rays and examined by the veterinarian. More information about her will be available in the next report.

Did you know...

In 2011, 34 turtles were rehabilitated and released back into the sea. Large turtles are released from a beach, while small turtles or turtles which are missing a flipper are released by boat far out at sea (courtesy of long-time, valued ARCHELON supporters The Aqua Divers Club).

You can see articles and some photos of past releases here on our website, or you might enjoy watching some videos of releases on you tube – just type in ARCHELON or sea turtle releases. For example:

Special note: In celebration of Earth Day, the Rescue Centre is organizing a special event on Sunday, 22 April. There will be games for children, an educational presentation, and a tour of the Rescue Centre. Watch the website for details.
