The first sea turtle nest of 2018 within the National Marine Park of Zakynthos was located by the volunteers of ARCHELON on Sunday, May 13th, on the beach of Gerakas.
This year the society had the joy and honour to accept the help of hundreds of voluteers from all around the world, a fact that demonstrates that after all, offering your time with single exchange the ethical dimension of "give and take", has acquainted huge importance, in the hard times the planet goes through!
On the occasion of World Tourist Day and the event “Sustainable Tourism-Tool for development” the Tourist Development committee of Rethymno offered an award to ARCHELON , acknowledging its long-term, systematic and substantial contribution to environmental protection and Caretta caretta sea turtles in particular, the expansion of volunteerism, the promotion and tourist development of Rethymno.
On the 15th August ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece was informed of another incident of a dead turtle in the bay of Laganas in Zakynthos. Unfortunately, since May, more than 20 cases of dead turtles have been recorded by ARCHELON, of which 11 have been recorded in the marine area of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. ARCHELON volunteers found the dead turtle at the port of Agios Sostis. This was a young male animal, which had severe blows on the shell and on the head from a boat collision.
