The Kotychi lagoon is located on the west coast of the Peloponnese, 62 kilometers southwest of Patra. It is a typical Mediterranean lagoon separated from the Ionian Sea by a narrow sands pit (check if this is the rightterm). The sandy beach from the lagoon area to the Kalogria location to the north hosts an average of about 50 nests per year and it is part of the Natura 2000 site “PARAKTIA THALASSIA ZONI APO AKR. KYLLINI EOS TOUMPI – KALOGRIA” with the Site Code: GR2330007.
The nesting beach is located within the borders of the Strofylia - Kotychi National Wetland Park. The recording of sea turtle nesting is done in cooperation with the National Park Management Agency. The National Park includes wetlands and seasonal flooded areas, coastal pine forest, sand dunes and limestone shrubs. Kotychi lagoon is a wetland of international importance and hosts significant numbers of birds during migration, breeding and wintering.
